The Lithuanian Mint has created a series of coins depicting one of the most ancient stories from Greek mythology – the tale of Jason and the Argonauts, and their heroic quest for the Golden Fleece. The third coin in the series, ‘Medea’s and Jason’s Love’, is devoted to the emotion of victorious love.
Love that is worth a sacrifice
The first two coins in this series tell the extraordinary love story of how the brave hero Jason was unable to resist the feminine charms of Medea. The love that sparked between them helped the leader of the Argonauts to overcome any challenge he faced, to attain seemingly impossible goals, and find his way back to the lady of his heart through love.
It is often said that behind every successful man is a strong woman – the story of Medea and Jason shows that, too. It was the loving Medea who helped the hero to overcome the trials of King Aeëtes and steal the Golden Fleece. Medea used magical herbs to put the dragon that was guarding the fleece to sleep.
Various myths speak of Medea’s numerous deeds, including rescuing Jason from his enemies, misleading or even killing them. It seems that in this extraordinary love story, every weapon was used to prevent the lovers from losing each other.
The wedding that crowns the story
The third coin in the series commemorates the culmination of this amazing love story: the wedding of Jason and Medea. The reverse of the coin depicts this significant moment – the lovers are finally in each other’s arms, having overcome all odds. Although some myths say that the wedding was hasty and intended to avoid punishment for Medea, it was a special occasion for the soulmates who could not live without each other. The wedding symbolizes how real love triumphs over all challenges and is finally rewarded with a sweet victory.
The obverse features a portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II surrounded by climbing vines. The coin is made from aged silver and is adorned with a ‘Swarovski’ crystal. Partial gilding, digital printing and high relief technologies were also used. This coin is a perfect gift not only for collectors, but also for newlyweds on their wedding day as a wish of eternal and all-conquering love.
We invite you to order the new coin of the Lithuanian Mint ‘Medea’s and Jason’s Love’ HERE.
