Will you dare to take the risk?
One dark night, a lone traveller wandered into a mysterious forest, where one could barely see a few metres ahead through the spreading branches. Once he had entered this intricate maze of trees, the young man didn’t know the way back, so he just walked on, hoping he would soon reach the end of the forest. Suddenly, he heard soft, melancholic singing, which seemed to cut through the air. His whole body began to tremble and, without knowing why, he was drawn in the direction of the mysterious and seductive female voices.
Dragging his feet, wading through a carpet of velvety moss, stumbling over fallen tree branches and getting up again, the solitary wanderer was drawn to where the hypnotic singing was coming from. Suddenly, a blinding beam of light appeared in front of him, and in the centre of it stood three women with perfect bird-like bodies. Refusing to believe what he was seeing, the traveller tried to walk closer, but was immediately knocked backwards by the force of a blow, so that he fell heavily on a stone behind him.
The next morning, a forest ranger happened to be walking by and saw a young man, his shirt open, sleeping sweetly in the soft moss. He came closer, leaned down and gave him a light shake. ‘Get up, it’s about time you went to work. No more dreaming about girls,’ the man said, clapping his hand on the traveller’s scratched chest as he stifled a laugh.
When he woke up from his sleep, the traveller couldn’t understand what had happened the night before. Only the scratches on his chest, as if from bird claws, reminded him of the three women of enchanting beauty, whose voices and looks would keep him awake for some time.
The three mythological creatures depicted on the reverse of this spectacular silver coin still arouse passions today. In Greek mythology, a harpy was a beautiful winged creature, half woman, half sharp-clawed bird. They were believed to be capable of harm, and the bones in their nests testified to the bravery of those who never returned from the dense forest.
The aged silver ‘Nest of Harpies’ coin is part of the four-coin ‘Mythical Creatures’ series, along with ‘The Minotaur’s Labyrinth’, ‘The Sirens’ and ‘The Sea Monster Kraken’. Get the entire collection to keep all the mythological creatures in your safe hands.
