Description

According to historical sources, it was once believed that Tutankhamun’s tomb might never be discovered. However, in 1922, it was found by chance by the persistent British archaeologist Howard Carter, whose excavations were financed by the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, Lord Porchester. After six years of unsuccessful searching, the Egyptologist was on the verge of abandoning his mission. Yet, unwilling to give up, he came closer than ever to fulfilling his dream. While searching beneath the remains of workers’ quarters, Carter uncovered a step that led to one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of the 20th century—the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun, also known as King Tut. For more than 3,000 years, this remarkable secret had remained hidden in the Valley of the Kings.

The treasures discovered inside Tutankhamun’s tomb astonished the world. Within the sarcophagus (a stone coffin) were not one, but three nested coffins containing the mummified body of the young pharaoh. The two outer coffins were made of wood, covered with gold, and decorated with semi-precious stones such as lapis lazuli and turquoise.

The tomb also contained around 5,000 artifacts, which have since helped scholars gain a deeper understanding of the history and culture of Ancient Egypt. The most remarkable discovery, however, was the Pharaoh’s golden funerary mask, weighing more than 10 kilograms and inlaid with semi-precious stones. This extraordinary archaeological find is now regarded as one of the greatest symbols of Ancient Egyptian civilization.

The obverse of the coin features the stylized Coat of Arms of Niue.
